Pros and Cons of Hand Sanitizer

Happy Tuesday! Dr. Kelly here. The Pros and Cons of using hand sanitizer.

In the past few years, we have become more likely to use hand sanitizer. Evaluating the pros and cons of hand sanitizer, along with its necessity and potential harms, is essential for making informed decisions about its use.

Pros:

  1. It’s convenient. I do keep a bottle in my car. I use it when soap and water are not available.
  2. It’s effective in killing germs. 60% alcohol can quickly reduce the number of germs on your hands.
  3. It’s quick.

Cons:

  1. Not very effective on dirty or greasy hands.
  2. It can cause skin irritation
  3. Development of Antimicrobial Resistance: There is some concern that the overuse of hand sanitizers, particularly those containing triclosan or other antimicrobial agents, could contribute to the development of resistant strains of bacteria. Although alcohol-based sanitizers are less likely to cause this issue, it is a potential risk with frequent and widespread use. ⚠⚠⚠

I like to use doTerra’s Hand Sanitizer. It fits in my purse well. I can travel with it on the airplane.
Gayle has some up front.

So, Is Hand Sanitizer Necessary?

hand sanitizerHand sanitizer is a valuable tool in maintaining hand hygiene, particularly in environments where soap and water are not readily available.

However, it is essential to balance its use with traditional hand washing. Soap and water are more effective at removing certain types of germs, dirt, and chemicals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing hands with soap and water whenever possible, reserving hand sanitizer for situations where hand washing is impractical.

To properly clean your hands, it is best to physically wash your hands with good old fashion soap and water. Note: this does not need to be antibacterial soap.
