Bone Broth Season

broth being poured into a bowlHappy Tuesday! Dr. Kelly here. Bone Broth season.

One of my go-to’s for myself and my family is bone broth. If you are sick, what is one of the first things you remember as a kid? Chicken noodle soup? Not only does chicken noodle soup made from scratch yummy, it is also very healthy for you. It is so easy to make. I make bone broth a few times a year. I store it in mason jars that are freezable.

Meal Prep

Here comes the meal prep again: Take a whole organic chicken, it is worth the few extra dollars, put it in a large pot. Fill it with water. Let is boil for 30-45 minutes. Scooping out the soup scum as it boils. Leaving all the water in the pot, remove the whole chicken from the pot. I cut chunks of the cooked meat and put it in a separate container. I use the boiled chicken meat for an enchilada dinner. Put the carcass in a crockpot. Transfer the water from the pot into the crockpot. Cook it on warm for 24-72 hours depending on when you have time to transfer it into jars. I strain the liquid bone broth into glass jars that are freezable. Let the jars cool and store in the freezer.

Bone broth has so many great minerals in it. It is a simple way to get good nutrition into your body. Bone broth has been around since the beginning of time when cooking every part of the animal was typical. It makes use of the parts of the animal that would get thrown away – the bones!

Minerals calcium, magnesium, phosphorus; iron, potassium, amino acids from bone broth are all easy to absorb. You hear about the benefits of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine, well they are both in bone broth too. This means you are getting some collagen source too!

The protein content in bone broth may support your body as it builds bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. You can take it out of the freezer and add raw chicken. Boil the chicken with the bone broth until the chicken is cooked, add any veggies you want. You have nutritious chicken soup. You could drink it like a tea or soup broth. You can buy bone broth as a powder.

Powdered Bone Broth

I use a powdered bone broth for my protein source after my workouts. I mix a scoop of bone broth with water in my shaker & drink it within 30 mins after I finished my workout. I also use it in recipes that you need broth.

Homemade tastes so much better than the store-bought ones. You can spice up these recipes with any vegetables, salt, or pepper. I like to keep it simple – only bones & meat.
