Algae Supplements

Dr. Kelly here. Have you ever tried Algae?

Algae is one of my go to supplements I take on trips. You may think of algae as a simple aquatic organism, when in reality it has numerous health benefits!

  • It is a nutritional powerhouse!!
  • It’s compact and easy to take.

I initially tried algae several years ago. It was in a tablet form that you chew. Can you imagine what plain algae tastes like? Yup, that’s what it tasted like. Very greenie. I was not a fan.

A couple of years ago I was open to try algae again as a tablet that you swallow. So much better!!

One of my favorite forms is Vitality Bits from ENERGYbits. You can get spirulina and chlorella. I get these ENERGYbits from Jen Rice Faith Wellness. Below is her info.

Jen says “Algae has existed for millions of years being one of our first food sources. Chlorella and Spirulina are superfoods to help detox, reduce inflammation and give you the energy you need to feel your best.”

Ok, So what are the types of algae?

  1. Green Algae (Chlorophyta)
  2. Red Algae (Rhodophyta)
  3. Brown Algae (Phaeophyceae)
  4. Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)
  5. Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae)
  6. Dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae)

Spirulina and Chlorella are Green Algae. They are rich in protein, vitamins – like B12), minerals and essential fatty acids. The high protein makes it a great source of protein for snacking!

Chlorella is known for detoxing. In theory you could take some chlorella after you have had a glass of wine and it will help your body detox and wake up feeling better in the morning.

Spirulina enhances the immune system. Both Chlorella and Spirulina contain high levels of antioxidants (protecting against oxidative stress and Reducing Inflammation.) Spirulina aids in weight management by promoting satiety and reducing hunger. It’s nutrient dense providing essential nutrients without a high calorie load.

Spirulina from a Blue-Green source is known to help increase energy, reduce fatigue, have protein and supports brain health.

Sea MossRed Algae is known for its anti-aging properties.

Kelp is a Brown Algae that is rich in iodine and supports the thyroid, has anti-inflammatory properties, helps in digestion and helps prevent acid reflux.

When you look for Algae, check the company to see what steps are taken for clean, low toxic harvesting of the algae.
